Cast a shield
Four figures are cast and eleven more are worked out. The Daughters are the four Mothers read down their lines instead of across; every figure below them is the sum of the two above it; and the sum of two figures is one rule applied four times. So of the fifteen figures on a shield, four are chance and eleven are arithmetic — and the arithmetic can be checked.
How a shield is made sets the whole method out with the 1655 English beside it. This page does it to four figures you cast yourself, and will walk you through it one move at a time.
Ask
What the cast is, in the book's own account, is not a machine: the points are supposed to be made without counting them, by somebody who wants an answer. The printing says outright that it does not matter where or how they are made.
Another power there is that doth direct and rule this Lot or Fortune, which is the very soule it selfe of the Projector, when he is carried to this work with some great egresse of his owne desire, for this Art hath a naturall obedience to the soule it selfe, and of necessity hath efficacy and is moved to that which the soule it self desires, and this way is by far more true and pure; neither matters it where or how these points are projected
In plain English What makes the cast answer, in this account, is the mind of the person casting — so the manner of making the marks is left open, and the book says outright that it does not matter where or how they are made.
