How the tradition took shape
In this section, we're trying to show the history of the books, people, translations and institutions that supplied modern ceremonial magic with its working material. Knowing when something entered the record helps us separate an Ancient source from a Renaissance interpretation, an order's teaching or a modern reconstruction. That makes the chronology an active part of practice, not just background: it shows what a ritual actually inherited.
Western esotericism did not pass unchanged through one hidden brotherhood, despite the fun stories of such3. Its strands run through ancient philosophy, astrology and ritual texts; Jewish, Christian and Islamicate scholarship; Renaissance Hermeticism and Cabala; grimoires, Rosicrucian stories and Freemasonry; and the nineteenth-century occult revival. The Golden Dawn drew many of these strands together, and Thelema and later magical movements revised them again.
