At a glance

In a question or event

Aries signifies a beginning that needs a decisive first move. In a question or event, it describes speed, initiative, heat and friction: useful for breaking a stalemate, but liable to rush past what follows.

In a personal chart

With Aries prominent in a birth chart, a person may meet life directly, act before certainty arrives and value independence. Courage and candour are strengths; impatience or treating every obstacle as a contest are possible costs.

These are possible readings, not predictions or a personality verdict from one Sun sign. The longer readings below show their sources.

What this sign means

A sign is a way of acting, not a person in miniature. In a horoscope it gives a planet or angle its pace, texture and habits; the planet says what is acting, the house says where, and the aspects describe the company it keeps. The sections below begin with fire, cardinal quality and Mars, then follow the older source into the places and bodily symbolism it gave Aries.

An older name for its quality

Ptolemy calls Aries equinoctial. It begins at an equinox, when day and night are approximately equal. Aries opens the vernal half of the tropical circle; Libra opens its autumnal half. This is one reason the later vocabulary calls both cardinal: they mark a turn, not a fixed temperament of a person.

His alternating diurnal and nocturnal signs are likewise a classification of the twelvefold sequence. Ptolemy records more than one way to begin that alternation, so the diurnal label above describes the scheme used on this page, not the only ancient scheme. The sign's arc is measured from the equinox; it is not the irregular starry constellation that bears the same name.

Character of the sign

Aries begins, separates and tests resistance. Its manner is quick, plain and willing to spend force before certainty arrives: useful when a first move matters, harsher when every obstacle is treated as a contest. Courage, candour and initiative belong here, as do haste, needless provocation and the cut made before its cost is understood.

A plain-language synthesis of the older qualities, not a quotation or a claim that one Sun sign describes a whole person.

Element and quality

Cardinal fire joins the hot, dry activity of fire to a quality that sets things in motion. The diurnal side makes the expression outward, while Mars gives it edge, appetite and the power to sever. Aries therefore means ignition rather than steady warmth: the spark, challenge or decisive beginning.

How it works in a chart A sign gives a planet or angle a manner of acting; it does not replace the rest of the horoscope. · 1 sourced reading
Reading the placement

A planet in Aries tries to do its work directly and under its own steam. Mercury argues or decides quickly; Venus pursues what it wants; the Moon responds before it has fully settled. The planet still says what faculty is acting, the house says where, and aspects show what helps or checks it—Aries supplies the pace and style.

Lilly's following chapter tells the student to combine the sign with its ruler, the Moon and other significators. This page follows that rule instead of treating a sign as a complete character verdict.

Places and the body Older horary and medical correspondences, kept as historical practice rather than health advice. · 2 sourced readings
Places and settings

Lilly gives Aries rough or newly worked ground: sandy hills, pasture for sheep and small cattle, stables, roofs and ceilings, freshly ploughed land, and places where brick or lime has been burned. The pictures share exposure, heat, height, new disturbance, or animals that move as a flock.

Paraphrased from Lilly's ‘Places [sign] signifieth’ list; useful in the older horary practice of describing a setting.

Traditional body correspondence

In the old zodiacal body, Aries governs the head and face. Lilly's medical list belongs to seventeenth-century astrological medicine; it records historical practice and is not a diagnosis or a reason to ignore medical care.

Historical astrological medicine is documented here without presenting it as healthcare.

When the Sun is in it

In 2026 the Sun enters Aries on 20 March at 14:45 UTC and leaves it on 20 April.

Those are computed for 2026 and are not a fixed range. The tropical zodiac is tied to the equinox, the calendar year is not quite the tropical year, and the leap-day correction is a sawtooth — so the ingress moves by more than a day across the cycle. Printed tables that give one date every year are wrong for a large minority of birthdays, and they are wrong precisely for people born on a boundary, who are the ones most likely to look it up.

Who rules it

Traditional

Mars

Ptolemy, Tetrabiblos I.17, second century.

Sign rulership canonical

Mars

Ptolemy assigns the houses of the planets outward from the two luminaries: the Sun takes Leo and the Moon takes Cancer, and the five remaining planets take two signs each, one on either side, in order of distance. Mars also rules Scorpio, which is what it means for seven planets to cover twelve signs.

Lilly, writing in 1647, still works with exactly seven planets and Ptolemy's houses. He is cited here to establish where the older system ends, not for a modern meaning.

Its place in the zodiac

Ptolemy names four intervals between signs in Tetrabiblos I.13: sextile (60°), square (90°), trine (120°) and opposition (180°). These are relationships between thirty-degree sections of the wheel, not claims that every planet in one section makes an exact aspect to every planet in another. The planets' actual longitudes decide that. The trine signs share an element; the opposite sign faces this one across the circle.

Square · 90°
