At a glance

In a question or event

Capricorn signifies a task built against time, limits and consequence. In a question or event, duty, structure, authority and durable results matter; progress is deliberate, with a cost that must be counted.

In a personal chart

With Capricorn prominent in a birth chart, a person may take responsibility seriously and build toward mastery through repeated effort. Reliability and stewardship are strengths; severity or fear of failure can make rest seem undeserved.

These are possible readings, not predictions or a personality verdict from one Sun sign. The longer readings below show their sources.

What this sign means

A sign is a way of acting, not a person in miniature. In a horoscope it gives a planet or angle its pace, texture and habits; the planet says what is acting, the house says where, and the aspects describe the company it keeps. The sections below begin with earth, cardinal quality and Saturn, then follow the older source into the places and bodily symbolism it gave Capricorn.

An older name for its quality

Ptolemy calls Capricorn solstitial. It begins at a solstice, when the Sun's apparent north–south movement reverses direction. Cancer and Capricorn are the two such signs in the tropical circle. Their later cardinal label names the turn at the season's threshold, not an automatic life event for someone born then.

His alternating diurnal and nocturnal signs are likewise a classification of the twelvefold sequence. Ptolemy records more than one way to begin that alternation, so the nocturnal label above describes the scheme used on this page, not the only ancient scheme. The sign's arc is measured from the equinox; it is not the irregular starry constellation that bears the same name.

Character of the sign

Capricorn accepts the weight of making something answerable to time. It sets a course, measures cost, respects limits and climbs by work that can be repeated when enthusiasm is gone. Its gravity can become mastery, stewardship and earned authority; it can also contract into severity, status anxiety, control, or a life organised entirely around what might fail.

A plain-language synthesis of the older qualities, not a quotation or a claim that one Sun sign describes a whole person.

Element and quality

Cardinal earth begins in the realm of matter, duty and consequence. Capricorn is nocturnal, Saturn-ruled and starts at the winter solstice, where the Sun's northern return begins from the year's deepest darkness. Its motion is deliberate commencement: lay the foundation, accept the boundary, then build.

How it works in a chart A sign gives a planet or angle a manner of acting; it does not replace the rest of the horoscope. · 1 sourced reading
Reading the placement

A planet in Capricorn tries to make its work durable, legitimate and effective. Mercury plans and names the terms; Mars applies disciplined effort; the Moon contains feeling until duties are met. House and aspect show whether responsibility produces sound form or becomes a defence against need, uncertainty and rest.

Lilly's following chapter tells the student to combine the sign with its ruler, the Moon and other significators. This page follows that rule instead of treating a sign as a complete character verdict.

Places and the body Older horary and medical correspondences, kept as historical practice rather than health advice. · 2 sourced readings
Places and settings

Lilly places Capricorn in barns, storehouses for tools, sheepfolds, fallow or thorny fields, ground used for dung, old wood, and dark low rooms near the floor or threshold. The setting is spare, practical and weathered: what remains when ornament gives way to use.

Paraphrased from Lilly's ‘Places [sign] signifieth’ list; useful in the older horary practice of describing a setting.

Traditional body correspondence

Capricorn is traditionally assigned the knees. The association is historical symbolism, not an assessment of anyone's joints or health.

Historical astrological medicine is documented here without presenting it as healthcare.

When the Sun is in it

In 2026 the Sun enters Capricorn on 21 December at 20:50 UTC and leaves it on 20 January.

Those are computed for 2026 and are not a fixed range. The tropical zodiac is tied to the equinox, the calendar year is not quite the tropical year, and the leap-day correction is a sawtooth — so the ingress moves by more than a day across the cycle. Printed tables that give one date every year are wrong for a large minority of birthdays, and they are wrong precisely for people born on a boundary, who are the ones most likely to look it up.

Who rules it

Traditional

Saturn

Ptolemy, Tetrabiblos I.17, second century.

Saturn

Ptolemy assigns the houses of the planets outward from the two luminaries: the Sun takes Leo and the Moon takes Cancer, and the five remaining planets take two signs each, one on either side, in order of distance. Saturn also rules Aquarius, which is what it means for seven planets to cover twelve signs.

  1. Tetrabiblos , Loeb Classical Library edition — Book I, chapter 17: Of the Houses of the Several Planets

The chapter that sets out the whole scheme. Ptolemy argues it from the relation of each planet's orbit to the solstitial signs rather than presenting it as received tradition.

Lilly, writing in 1647, still works with exactly seven planets and Ptolemy's houses. He is cited here to establish where the older system ends, not for a modern meaning.

Its place in the zodiac

Ptolemy names four intervals between signs in Tetrabiblos I.13: sextile (60°), square (90°), trine (120°) and opposition (180°). These are relationships between thirty-degree sections of the wheel, not claims that every planet in one section makes an exact aspect to every planet in another. The planets' actual longitudes decide that. The trine signs share an element; the opposite sign faces this one across the circle.

Square · 90°
