Eight of Swords · Shortened Force
A bound and blindfolded woman stands among eight swords on wet ground, separated from a distant fortress.

Upright, Waite associates the card with constraint, crisis, censure, conflict and bad news, while describing the bondage as temporary. Reversed, it can indicate disquiet, opposition, accident or unforeseen difficulty.
Waite treats these as historical divinatory allocations and explicitly warns that they vary by context and are not a universal symbolic canon.
